What Is SCCA Autocross?
"A driving skill competition, where you and your car negotiate a course laid out in a parking lot and marked with traffic cones. The lowest time wins, and penalty seconds are added to your score for each cone you knock down. It’s just one car at a time, so there’s little risk of trading paint with other cars. Solo speeds are relatively low, typically second gear for most cars. The turns come up quickly, though, so don’t be fooled into thinking Solo is boring. To get a good low time you must be smooth and precise, and quick. The skills you learn in the parking lot will greatly improve your car control, and help make you a safer driver on the street. The region puts on a Novice School early each season, which is an excellent opportunity to get coaching from some of the region’s best drivers. A Test and Tune day is available to experienced autocrossers, which is very handy for dialing in new suspension setups, adjusting to new tires, or simply getting plenty of practice.
FLR Solo events usually attract 80 to 100 competitors, and a minimum of three runs can be expected. Four timed runs are often possible, and $2 fun runs are usually available at the end of the day. Every effort is made to provide safe and challenging courses…fun for novice drivers but rewarding for the experts. Each course is approved by SCCA-trained safety stewards.
Loaner helmets are provided, and Novice and Road Tire classes are available for those who wish to compete against other novices or street tire users.
If you’ve always been interested in competing, but can’t afford to buy a separate race car, Solo may be the sport for you. The risk of hurting yourself or your car is much lower than most other motor sports (indeed, much lower than driving to and from the event), and it’s a great place to learn car control skills while having a lot of fun. Cars are classed with other cars of similar performance, and classes are divided into four different preparation levels (from stock to highly modified). You really can “run what ya brung”!"
